When you think of Netflix Originals, chances are what comes to mind are their original television shows. That’s okay, because they’ve got some great original series content with more on the way.
But they’ve also got original movies, like the upcoming ARQ, which looks like it could be interesting. Or it could be a dud. The basic premise is one that’s been done many times before: People trapped in a time loop; a Groundhog Day scenario. When it’s done well, a story like this can be great, but when it sticks to too many overused tropes, it can fall flat.
The film is written by Tony Elliott. On the plus side, he’s worked on 20 episodes of Orphan Black. That’s good. On the negative side, he’s worked on 7 episodes of the short-lived Hunters. That was a show, try as I may, I just could not connect with.
I have to say that just judging by the trailer, ARQ may very well be in the “Great” camp. But of course that’s what trailers are designed to do, right? Their sole job is to make the project they’re pushing look like the best thing ever. Take a look and tell me what you think, then starting this Friday, September 16, you can watch and we’ll all find out if we were right … or if we need a do-over.
Trapped in a lab and stuck in a time loop, a disoriented couple fends off masked raiders while harboring a new energy source that could save humanity.
ARQ premieres Friday, September 16 on Netflix
